Character Entities

Several people have asked how you put characters and symbols that are not on the keyboard into your HTML pages.  This is not obvious but thankfully, it’s pretty simple.  You need to use what are called “Character Entities”.  Since there is no “©” key on the keyboard, we need to use a special code that will tell the browser to use the copyright symbol.  So, in your HTML code you will put in “©” where you want the symbol to show up.  Make absolutely sure you don’t forget the “&” and closing “;” or you will end up with the literal code rendered in the browser.  Here is a list of common European, mathematical and other symbols. If you are still confused, take a look at this explanation in German.
